LO2: Textual analysis of rushes -distinction
How meaning has been created in the rushes using production techniques:
The focus point within this textual analysis of the rushes
will be how mese-en-scene elements I'm different editing techniques create
effects and how this impacts the audience and overall genre of our short film.
One of the main mese-en-scene elements that is very
particular within our short film is the setting where all the information is
given to the audience, which is the secure hospital where Beverley Allitt Is
currently serving her sentence. by filming in this setting emphasises to the
audience the reality of the documentary highlighting that the events that
occurred and the information that is presented to them is all based on fact
which happened in a real life setting. The target audience may also be able to
relate more and be able to Position themselves closer to the documentary as
they will understand the reality surrounding the topics. to fully represent
this real life scenery we have included different shot types within the title
clip so that we were able to incorporate all angles of the setting itself to
create this impact on our audience.
Steve Neale’s Repetition and difference theory can be used
here when focusing on the specific conventions of a documentary. we followed
the basic structure that documentary has, for example visiting the location and
including factual evidence, which represents the repetition factor of the theory.
However to make a documentary more unique we included multiple speakers In
order to make the documentary more interesting because we found that when
listening to one person throughout audiences became less interactive I didn't
take in all the information. We also added more visual aids within our
documentary so the audience can visualise the information that was given to
them resulting in them not having to use their imagination as much, which also
meant that their attention was on the information more.
As mentioned previously, Todorov’s Narrative theory is
present due to the story like structure that we follow when giving the
information to the audience. To indicate this further, at the beginning of our
short film we give a brief explanation to what we are talking about and then
inform the audience about Beverley's childhood, moving on to the middle of the
documentary, the audience faced the ‘dilemma’ which in this case will be the crimes
committed themselves. Finally, the documentary finishes explaining to the
audience where she is now and any extra information about further crimes that
she has committed while in the hospital. The narrative could also show examples
of an enigma narrative, on the basis that the audience will question and why
she committed the crimes and where she is now. this will enhance audiences
interest as the enigma narrative influences them to continue to watch in order
to find out their unanswered questions.
Due to our short film being a documentary, I have found it
difficult to analyse specific mese-en-scene elements within in terms of the
character, the costume and the positioning. In terms of character we decided to
incorporate two actors who will be looking directly into the camera with the
hospital in the backdrop. This will allow the audience to feel more included
because we are creating the effect that we are talking directly to them and the
use of background setting establishes where we are (the hospital) making the
overall documentary interesting. To maximise our niche mood (serious) We
decided to wear dark colours which is also effective as we are talking about
trivial topics, such as murder. Lastly, there isn‘t a scene where both actors
are on screen at the same time so the proxemics between the two are non
existent however to position our audience closer to the topic we ensure that
their interest is maintained through visual aids and Make certain that when the
presenters are speaking that tone fluctuates so that the information given
doesn't sound dull and is more interactive with our target audience.
When filming in an outdoor setting we needed to make certain that all the audio can be heard especially when factors such as the weather (in particular wind) muffle the audio. It is vital that all the information can be heard clearly due to the important and significance of the material itself. When editing the clips we had to adjust the sound In order to hear all the information, we did this by lowering parts of the background noise. Another technique that we ensured to add on to our final edit of the film is the different camera movements, which show the hospital that the subject is currently in. this allows the audience to see where the killer is today and allows them to understand the reality due to the building actually existing.
